Okay, I’ll admit it: when I first heard the words, “property taxes,” my brain immediately wanted to scream at how bored it would be if it heard any more. But after being in the property tax industry in a financial services firm for less than a year, I learned there’s a lot of good that few are aware of that comes out of paying property taxes.
There is a pot of gold at the end of that looming property tax bill you receive from your local taxing authority every year… And it does a lot more good than you may realize.
Property taxes are used to fund public services for counties and other municipalities within a district. Without them, the county is unable to fund public schools, police departments, fire departments, and other government services. They also benefit the maintenance of public roads, parks, and public libraries.
Most of the time, public schools get their funding from multiple sources, but the largest comes from property taxes. Your taxes help pay to keep their doors open and allow students to continue their education. Without it, schools can’t pay their teachers, keep books on the shelves, or provide essential programs for their students.
#DYK – Chicago had more than $127 million in delinquent property taxes last year. This affects Chicago public services!
For our local Chicagoans, our property taxes also help fund the public parks and construction of roads. The weather is rough and can do a lot of damage, making roads harder to travel on – traffic not included. Public parks offer a number
of events year-round for locals and tourists to enjoy and a place to escape the concrete jungle in favor of trees, grass, or even a sandy beach.
Suddenly, property taxes don’t seem boring or bothersome. Here’s where my education really kicked in while learning about my company on my first day:
